Artist Statement
My work consists mainly of portraits and figures. I seek balance within my paintings between opposing forces: rigid and spontaneous, inside and out, serious and silly. By navigating this push and pull, my work is neither realistic nor abstract – visual studies combine with unseeable feelings.
My hope is that my paintings value honesty over objectivity and therefore create a more holistic representation of the person and scene depicted.
Bio
Alex Spragens was born and raised in Southeastern Kentucky. Alex is an oil painter with an emphasis on portraits and figures. He received his BA from Centre College in Danville, KY in 2020. Alex has practiced as an artist through excursions and residencies in Vietnam and in the Canary Islands. He has worked as a Teaching Artist for ArtistYear and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Alex currently lives and works in Chicago, IL.
